Organic Cotton vs Tencel vs Linen Sheets: $200 Worth of Testing

We bought sheets in all three materials and slept on them for 3 months each. Temperature regulation, durability, and which ones actually get better with washing.

Temperature Regulation

Linen: Best for hot sleepers. Linen wicks moisture and allows significantly more airflow than cotton — body heat dissipates through the fabric. All 6 testers reported linen as the most comfortable in temperatures above 72°F. In cold weather, linen feels cool until your body warms it.

Tencel (lyocell): Excellent for warm sleepers who want a smoother feel than linen. Tencel's moisture-wicking is comparable to linen, with a noticeably softer hand. Best all-around temperature regulation value.

Organic cotton (percale weave): Good temperature regulation but not as effective as linen or Tencel. Percale (plain weave) sleeps cooler than sateen (satin weave). Sateen cotton feels more luxurious initially but sleeps warmer.

Durability

Linen: Gets better with every wash. Fibers soften and the fabric becomes more supple without losing strength. Our linen sheets after 3 months were noticeably better than new. Lifespan: 15-20 years. Worth the higher initial cost.

Tencel: Maintains quality well with proper care (cold wash, line dry or low heat). After 3 months, no pilling, no loss of softness. Lifespan: 8-12 years.

Cotton: Shows pilling after 2-3 months of regular use. Quality degrades faster than linen. Lifespan: 5-7 years for good quality, 2-3 for budget sheets.
