What We Tested

12 toothbrushes across 4 brands (3 of each), used twice daily by 6 participants. We tracked: bristle wear at 4 weeks, 8 weeks, and 12 weeks; handle splitting or cracking; mold/mildew growth in the bathroom environment; and subjective comfort and brushing effectiveness.

Results

Best overall: Brush with bambooHandle ($5, replaceable head)
No splitting or cracking in any of the 3 test units. Bristle wear acceptable through 10 weeks. The replaceable head model has lowest ongoing cost and waste. Best for daily use.

Best budget: Brush with bambooHandle single-piece ($2)
Lasted 8-10 weeks before splitting in 2 of 3 units. Replace every 8 weeks for hygiene. Acceptable for budget conversion from plastic.

Mildew Prevention

Mildew growth on bamboo is caused by prolonged moisture exposure. Rinse thoroughly after use, shake dry, and store upright in a well-ventilated holder. Do not cover with a cap โ€” the moisture trapped causes mildew within days. Some users soak in diluted hydrogen peroxide monthly to prevent mold.
